What is top of mind for Seattle-area ED's when it comes to data management, reporting and stewardship? Find out what participants at the ED Forum on May 20 had to say.

What is top of mind for Seattle-area ED's when it comes to data management, reporting and stewardship? I got a window into the minds of several area ED's at the ED Forum hosted this morning by the Alliance of Nonprofits and 501 Commons, thanks to the opportunity to facilitate a roundtable discussion about data stewardship. In general, technology tools mentioned by participants included Salesforce, ETapestry, Raiser's Edge, GiftWorks, Excel and Access. And everyone recognized the importance of the people side of the equation, and the need for consistency and solid systems of data collection and entry as a foundation for good data stewardship.

Themes that emerged from the discussion included:

  • How to respond to board requests for metrics, data, reports in a meaningful way? When is the information being requested TBU (true but useless, to borrow from Dan and Chip Heath's book Switch)?
  • Keeping data current and accurate when you've had to let the "data person" go for funding reasons
  • How to effectively track beyond outputs to meaningful outcomes?
  • Concern about not using the full capacity of the database system that's in place
  • Frustration with the current database system
  • Concern about a lack of consistency in data entry, resulting in inconsistent reporting
  • Interest in determining metrics for measuring the effectiveness of social media, and how to track over time
  • Request for referrals for board training
  • Reflections on the importance of good data for decision making and communications

Participants today also recommended the United Way of King County's training events designed for nonprofit staff and volunteers.

Database know-how can come from a variety of sources, including NPower's overview of Salesforce class and monthly user groups, and training provided by solutions providers like ETapestry, Convio and Salesforce.

Communications and social media metrics tracking resources mentioned included Beth Kanter's blogNonprofit Marketing Guide,  Movie Monday videos from 501 videos, Tune Up Tuesdays videos and meet ups from Claxon
