Are you sick of paper documents? Are you constantly dealing with .PDF documents? Do you know what PDF stands for? (Hint: Portable Document Format). Are you sick of paper documents? Are you constantly dealing with .PDF documents? Do you know what PDF stands for? (Hint: Portable Document Format). In this article I’m going to introduce you to two free pieces of software that I use regularly. One of them acts as a virtual printer and allows you to turn anything you can normally print into a .PDF document instead. The other tool allows you to merge and split PDF documents - handy for turning two or more separate .PDFs into one, or vice-versa.

The first tool is Bullzip PDF Printer. It is a Windows-only piece of software and can be downloaded from the Bullzip PDF Printer website here (4.5 MB). Note that during the installation process it requires two other components (approximately 9 MB and 2 MB) that it will download and install as well. The process should take less than a couple minutes. Now you’re ready to go!

Now whenever you want to turn a document, web page, etc. into a .PDF, just press the “Print” button like you would for a physical printer. However, instead of selecting a physical printer, choose the PDF printer option instead.

It’ll ask you where you want to save the file and provide you with some other options that normally come with .PDF files, such as encryption.

Now what about when you have multiple .PDF documents that you want to merge? The other free tool that I use pretty regularly is PDF Sam Split and Merge. This open-source project was built using Java, so it’s available for both Windows and Mac users. You can download the PDFSam Basic (which has plenty of utility-- no need to get the enhanced version) from the PDFSam download page here (14 MB).

Once it’s installed just select the operation you want to perform (merge, split, or others) from the list on the left, select the documents and options, and hit run. Pretty simple!
